REAL SHEEPSKIN BOOT & SLIPPER MATERIALS

I make each pair of sheepskin boots and slippers by hand, carefully choosing the materials I work with. Each decision is made with respect for the environment, animal welfare, and the life of the product.

ECO-TAN SHEEPSKIN

I only use sheepskin that’s a by-product of the meat industry, which would otherwise be wasted. Each hide is unique, strong, and the best quality sheepskin I’ve ever worked with. It’s important to honour the material by working with care, intention, and as little waste as possible. I plan the layout carefully to make the best of each skin, and anything left over is donated to a recycling charity.

The skins I work with come from Australia, because the remaining UK tanneries only process sheepskin for rugs, not for footwear. The tannery I use has been awarded a Gold Standard for environmental practices by the Leather Working Group. They use natural biological tanning agents and have significantly reduced chemical, energy, and water consumption.

ANIMAL WELFARE

I keep a small flock of sheep on a smallholding in Wales. While I don’t use their skins for my boots and slippers, caring for them gives me a deep respect for sheepskin as a material.

The sheepskins I use come from animals that have been raised humanely, in line with the internationally recognised Five Freedoms:

  • Freedom from hunger or thirst

  • Freedom from discomfort

  • Freedom from pain, injury or disease

  • Freedom to express most normal behaviour

  • Freedom from fear and distress

VEGETABLE TANNED LEATHER

The leather heel supports the boot’s structure and keeps it secure on your foot. I use vegetable-tanned leather, a traditional method that preserves the skin with natural tannins from plants rather than chemicals.

The leather is thick and durable so there’s no need for hidden plastic layers. This natural material responds to you, moulding to the shape of your foot and adapting over the years. Where plastic has no give, leather becomes more comfortable with use.

Each heel is embossed with my logo, pressed carefully so the mark is clean and defined, my signature of authenticity. On custom-made boots, you can choose the finish: metallic for a subtle shine, or matt for an understated look.

ORGANIC HEMP

The hemp binding on my boots and slippers finishes the edges and protects the stitching, creating a neat, considered look. The herringbone weave has a tactile, V-shaped twill pattern that complements the suede beautifully.

Hemp is a natural, sustainable material, grown without chemical fertilisers. It needs far less water than cotton, and requires no pesticides or herbicides.

RECYCLED THREAD

The thread is a small component, easy to overlook. I use high-quality thread made from 100% recycled plastic bottles, giving discarded materials a second life and reducing waste.

Every stitch matters, making each pair strong, durable, and built to last.

RECYCLED SOLES

All the soles are made with 60% recycled material. They have just the right mix of flexibility, grip, resilience and lightness, ideal for sheepskin slippers and boots. For custom-made boots, you can choose from three types of sole.
